Spanish exports reached a record 254.53 billion euros in 2016. Last year, 1.7% in value, a growth rate above that registered in economies such as Germany (+ 1.2%), Italy (+1,1%), France (-0.9%), the United Kingdom (-0.2%), the United States (-3.2%), China (-6.4%) or Japan (-7.4%).

Despite the improvement in domestic consumption, imports decreased by 0.4% in 2016 to 273,284 million euros. And that decline is mainly explained by the price of oil and gas, which despite the rebound in recent months has provided savings in energy products of 8,880 million compared to 2015 and 24,904 million compared to the energy bill of 2014. Spain has always been deficient in the trade of goods, but it compensates it with sales of services and, above all, tourism. In fact, until October 2016, the current account recorded a surplus of 15.6 billion, 65% higher than in October 2015, driven, among other factors, by the good performance of the tourism sector and the low price of oil.
